Step by Step

The Kyoto Tower, opened in 1964, rises 131 metres in front of the north exit of Kyoto Station, standing out as the tallest building in the city. Its design, inspired by a burning candle, was the work of engineer Makoto Tanahashi, and since its earliest days it has been a modern icon in the landscape of the former imperial capital.

Take the lift in the adjacent hotel to the 10th floor (11th actual floor), where you'll change cabins to reach the Sky Lounge or directly to the observation deck. From the observatory you can enjoy 360° panoramic views: see the rooftops of the temples, the majestic Higashi Hongan-ji, and on clear days even make out Arashiyama and Osaka on the horizon.

The observation deck has interactive touch panels in several languages (Japanese and English) to help you identify landmarks, mountains and train lines, including the Shinkansen in and out of the station. You'll also get a close-up view of Kyoto Station's impressive façade, a masterpiece of contemporary architecture.

Despite its 'retro' 1960s look, the tower has been maintained and modernised: access is fully enclosed and air-conditioned, with wheelchair-accessible lifts dropping you practically on the observation deck, ensuring a comfortable visit for all.
