Sintra Pena Park Tickets

Originally created in the 19th century by King Ferdinand II of Portugal—a passionate lover of architecture and landscape design—the park began when the king acquired the convent of Nossa Senhora da Pena and transformed it into a romantic palace. He then developed the expansive surrounding grounds to enhance the site's beauty.

Your ticket includes admission to the Countess of Edla's Chalet, a charming building showcasing romantic architecture with Swiss and German influences. The Countess of Edla was a Swiss opera singer named Elise Friedericke Hensler who married King Ferdinand in 1869.

The king enlisted German landscape architect Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege and German architect and stage designer Ludwig von Rohden to design both the park and palace. Together, they created a magnificent forest featuring exotic plant species from around the world alongside native Portuguese flora. This beautiful green space is dotted with picturesque trails, charming bridges, cascading waterfalls, tranquil ponds, and intriguing man-made grottoes.

The park opened to the public in 1910 following the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic. Today, Pena Park is a beloved tourist destination welcoming visitors from across the globe. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, along with other Sintra landmarks.
