Experience Highlights

Discover the truest essence of Patagonia with this half-day excursion to Estancia Nibepo Aike from El Calafate. The experience combines nature, culture and gastronomy. Upon arrival, you’ll enjoy a welcome reception with hot drinks and homemade pastries, tour the ranch’s facilities and take part in activities related to livestock farming, such as herding sheep and, in season, milking.

Step by Step

The excursion begins in El Calafate, from where you’ll take the famous Camino de las Estancias towards Nibepo Aike. During the journey, you’ll be able to admire the Patagonian steppe, Cerro Frías and, with a bit of luck, spot animals such as condors, foxes or hares. After crossing the River Rico, the landscape changes, giving way to a more mountainous setting.

On arrival at the estancia, your host will welcome you in the quincho with tea, coffee or mate, accompanied by tortas fritas or homemade puddings. It’s the perfect moment to take a break, enjoy the surroundings and take in the views of the Andes before setting off on the tour.

You’ll then be shown around the facilities of a ranch that, for many years, was primarily dedicated to sheep farming and which today is also renowned for its Hereford cattle breeding. The tour offers an insight into the history of the place, its day-to-day activities and the way of life of those who once lived on these lands.

You can then choose, at the ranch itself, between an easy walk or a 45-minute guided horse ride. The walking route follows paths offering views of the southern arm of Lake Argentino, forests of lenga and ñire trees, and rock formations shaped by glacial action. Those opting for the horse ride will explore the surrounding area on horseback accompanied by a local guide. The horse riding activity is subject to availability and accommodates a maximum of 10 riders per session.

The experience concludes with a visit to the old shearing shed, now converted into a historical museum, and a lunch of spit-roasted lamb, served with salads, dessert and a glass of wine or a non-alcoholic drink. After lunch, you’ll set off on the return journey to El Calafate.

I recommend taking the longer tour as you won't want to leave. The hours on horseback and the delicious lunch in company was the best part.
