Are there guided tours of the Vienna House of Music? Are they worth it or is it better to visit on your own?

Would you like to immerse yourself in the world of Viennese music? Then you'll want to take a guided tour of the city's House of Music. The only drawback is that the museum only offers tours for children on weekends and for special and/or private events. The solution? Book a tour that includes a professional guide. Don't think that this means the price goes up (it costs approximately £10), as on these tours you join other people who have also booked this service and get a group discount.

Are these kinds of guided tours worth it? In my opinion, yes. In fact, they are highly recommended because they ensure that you leave feeling confident that you have learned about what you have seen, rather than just walking from room to room.

There are different options depending on the type of tour you are looking for. If you want to go at your own pace, it is best to book a tour with an audio guide, but if you want to be able to ask questions, it is better to look for an alternative that includes a tour guide. If you don't want to join one, don't worry; all the rooms in the House of Music are interactive to make it entertaining and interesting.

Although you can buy tickets at the box office on the day of your visit, I recommend purchasing them online in advance. This will save you time by avoiding queues, guarantee your admission on busy days and allow you to enjoy your visit without rushing or unexpected delays.

Buying tickets in person is only recommended if you are eligible for special discounts (for students, families, senior citizens or evening visits). In this case, you should go directly to Seilerstätte 30 with the documentation proving your eligibility for the discount. If the main entrance is closed due to an event, an alternative entrance will be provided at Annagasse 20.

Are tickets to the House of Music included in any city sightseeing passes?

Have you purchased the Vienna Pass or another city pass to visit the city? You're in luck because admission to the House of Music is included. With this cultural pass, you pay a single price of approximately £70 and don't have to worry about buying tickets for most of Vienna's tourist attractions. It's a great option if your travel plans include visiting some of the more than 60 attractions that are part of the Vienna Pass.

The Vienna Pass is one of the tourist passes accepted by the Haus der Musik for admission to this great museum, but there are others, such as the Vienna City Card. Please note that the latter offers a discount (approximately £8.50 as the final price), but not full admission.

How to get to the Vienna House of Music

The Vienna House of Music is definitely worth a visit for its historical, artistic and cultural wealth alone, but it is also very centrally located.

It is located in the old part of the city, at Seilerstätte 30 (also accessible via Annagasse 20). It is very easy to get there on foot from the city centre or by public transport. Here are the best ways to get there:

By underground

From any of these stops, it is about a 10-minute walk to the entrance.

  • U1 (Stephansplatz or Karlsplatz)
    • U2 (Karlsplatz)
    • U3 (Stephansplatz)
    • U4 (Karlsplatz or Stadtpark)

By tram

  • Lines 1 and 62 → Karlsplatz/Oper stop
  • Lines 2, 71 and D → Schwarzenbergplatz stop

On foot

If you are already in Vienna's historic centre, you can walk there in just a few minutes.

By car

Not recommended, as there is no parking available and the surrounding spaces are paid and have time limits.

Opening hours of the House of Music

You will have plenty of flexibility when visiting the Vienna House of Music, as it is open every day (Monday to Sunday) from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The only day of the year when these opening hours change is 24 December, when it closes at 6 p.m. However, keep in mind that the last admission is half an hour before closing time, although I don't recommend rushing because you'll only have thirty minutes to see everything.

The great museum of Viennese music is open for twelve hours every day (from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.), with admission until 9:30 p.m. Going at night is an alternative, especially since you can take advantage of the discount for night tickets (approximately £7 between 8pm and 9.30pm), although you won't have time to enjoy the visit as much as it deserves. These opening hours are the same on weekends and public holidays, except on Christmas Eve (24 December), when it only opens until 6pm.

Would you like to buy a souvenir before you leave? The museum shop, located on the fourth floor, is open from 11am to 6pm and can be accessed without a ticket to see the rest of the exhibition.

Is it advisable to visit the Vienna House of Music with children?

Are you travelling to Vienna with children? Then you have to include the Haus der Musik in your plans. Don't think they'll get bored in a museum, because in fact they might have more fun than you.

All the rooms are interactive and can be enjoyed with all the senses, not just hearing. I would go so far as to say that the experience has been designed with children in mind, which is why on weekends, at 2pm, there are 2-hour tours for them and the ticket price is quite low (between £7 and £12 with an extra £1 if you include the Saturday and Sunday tour).

The best thing about the Casa de la Música is that it makes you feel that sound can be touched, something that children especially appreciate. For example, they can bring out their creative side with the instruments, experiment with music and learn about its history at the same time. In short, this museum has managed to combine play and education to make the visit memorable for children.

One of the elements that most catches their attention is the piano on the stairs, which plays as you go up and down each step. But there is much more! There's a game where you can compose your own waltz, a simulation where you can conduct the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and facilities where you can experiment with sound and learn about the history of great musicians. These are undoubtedly activities that children (and adults) will thoroughly enjoy.

Are you planning your visit to the Vienna Music House? This interactive museum is divided into four floors with activities and spaces that combine music, science and history. Here is a summary of the highlights you shouldn't miss:

  • Vienna Philharmonic Museum: discover the history of one of the world's finest orchestras through documents, original objects and historical recordings.
  • Interactive activities: compose your own waltz or explore how different instruments sound in creative ways.
  • Sonotopia: immerse yourself in sensory installations that combine science and sound. Ideal for experiencing how we perceive audio from before we are born.
  • Composers' Hall: learn about Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert with objects, scores and interactive biographies.
  • Creative installations: try out 'Namadeus' (your name turned into a Mozart melody) and head to the room where you can take the helm of the Philharmonic as conductor.

How much time do you need to visit the Vienna House of Music?

The Vienna Music House is one of the best museums in Vienna for a reason, so don't expect a quick visit; you'll want to stop in every room, try out all the games, read or listen to every explanation... In total, there are five floors and lots of fun, so you'll need about three or four hours.

Of course, you can spend less time there. If you just want to focus on the main attractions and explanations without stopping at every exhibit, two hours is enough, but you'll be missing out on the most entertaining parts of the visit. In any case, I recommend setting aside a whole morning (or afternoon) to explore the Vienna House of Music.

Tips for visiting the Vienna House of Music

How excited are you to visit the House of Music? Whether you are a music lover or not, I am sure you will enjoy your visit. It is a place to enjoy all kinds of sounds and understand how science and art combine behind them. To make the most of your time there, I would like to make some recommendations and give you some final tips. Grab a pen and paper and take note:

  • Go with plenty of time to spare: although the Haus der Musik is open until 10 pm, don't wait until closing time thinking there will be fewer people. Whether there are more visitors or not, you'll want to see and try everything at your own pace.
  • Backpacks are not allowed inside: keep this in mind and, if possible, don't bring one. In any case, as indicated on their website, there is a free cloakroom service supervised by museum staff, but there are no individual lockers that you can use and lock.
  • The entire space is wheelchair and pushchair accessible.
  • If you want to buy a discounted ticket, remember that you can only do so at the ticket office (online, you can only purchase general admission tickets at full price).
  • You can leave and re-enter the museum on the same day, but you must keep your ticket and inform the staff.

Have I convinced you that visiting the Vienna House of Music is one of the best things to do in the Austrian capital? I hope you've found these tips and information useful.
