Step by Step
The Museum of Fine Arts Ghent (MSK) houses one of the most comprehensive collections in Northern Europe, with works ranging from the Middle Ages to contemporary art. Founded in 1798, the museum has grown over the centuries and today offers a continuous narrative of how painting, sculpture and graphic arts have evolved in Flanders and beyond.
Along the way, you'll see Flemish Primitives and Renaissance masters such as Hieronymus Bosch and Peter Paul Rubens, whose religious and mythological compositions catch the eye. The MSK also celebrates 19th-century art with pieces by James Ensor and the modernist revolution of René Magritte, whose works offer a unique insight into symbolism and surrealism.
The newly expanded and renovated building itself combines classic brick architecture with contemporary steel and glass design, creating light-filled spaces that enhance the visual experience. The rearranged rooms allow for a natural flow that guides the visitor through styles, schools and periods.
The audio guide, available in English, French and Dutch, provides historical and artistic context for each room. All you need to do is download the museum's app or use your mobile browser after scanning the QR code on the ticket. This allows you to pause in front of each work for as long as you like and delve into details that would otherwise go unnoticed.
