One of the must-see wonders in Split, Croatia’s second-largest city, is Diocletian’s Palace. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
The ruins of this palace, built between the late 3rd and early 4th centuries AD, are scattered throughout the city. The cathedral was built in the Middle Ages, reusing materials from the ancient mausoleum. Romanesque churches from the 12th and 13th centuries, medieval fortifications, 15th-century Gothic palaces and other Renaissance and Baroque-style palaces make up the rest of the protected area.
Among the sights you’ll see are:
- St Duje’s Cathedral: you’ll visit the exterior of this cathedral, considered one of the oldest in the world, although admission is not included
- The statue of Gregory of Nin: created by Ivan Meštrović, it is one of Split’s most popular attractions
- The Golden Gate: one of the main entrances to Split’s city walls
- The City Clock: situated in the centre of Split, this clock has a dial showing 24 hours rather than 12
Similarly, many scenes from Game of Thrones in seasons 3, 4, 5 and 6 were filmed in Split. As a result, it has become a veritable pilgrimage site for fans of the acclaimed series.
