Step by Step
Discover how Claude Monet transformed a quiet Normandy village into a sanctuary of art and nature. From 1883 until his death, the painter shaped Giverny by creating an unparalleled botanical garden that inspired some of his masterpieces, such as the "Water Lilies" series.
The visit begins by entering the house-museum, whose pink façade and green shutters have been kept intact. Walk through the interior as Monet left it: the épicerie with its hanging furniture, the blue salon, and the atelier, full of brushes and canvases. See also the collection of Japanese prints that the artist treasured, reflecting his passion for oriental aesthetics.
Next, enter the main garden, the Clos Normande, designed in the French style with pergolas of roses, cherry and apricot trees. This orderly setting contrasts with the botanical exuberance of the water garden, where the famous Japanese bridge is reflected in the pond filled with water lilies, peonies and weeping willows.
Your expert guide will share anecdotes about Monet's creative process, explaining how he captured light on his canvases and how every corner of the garden held pictorial significance. You will learn to recognise references to his paintings as you admire the very corners he immortalised.
