Step by Step
The Musée des Arts et Métiers is a real journey back in time, founded in 1794 to preserve humanity's great inventions. As you walk through its doors, you will enter a space that combines industrial architecture and scientific collections, where each display case tells the story of a technological milestone.
Start your tour with Foucault's pendulum, installed in 1851 to demonstrate the rotation of the Earth. Its hypnotic oscillation will connect you with one of the most replicated experiments in science. A few steps away you will find the miniature replica of the Statue of Liberty, designed by Bartholdi before sending the original to New York.
Walk through corridors filled with steam engines, automatons, self-calculating machines and the first internal combustion engine. Each section is arranged chronologically, allowing you to appreciate the transition from medieval craftsmanship to the industrial revolution and, finally, the digital age.
The temporary exhibitions, included with your pass, cover topics as diverse as contemporary robotics, the history of communications and futuristic transport designs. These exhibitions change regularly, guaranteeing a reason to return.
For the more curious, the museum organises occasional workshops and demonstrations (check the official website for dates). You can also buy reproductions, specialised books and design objects inspired by the collections in the boutique.
