Step by Step
The route begins when the bus leaves Paris and heads for Rouen, the Gothic birthplace of Joan of Arc and Monet's muse. The half-timbered façades and the immense cathedral set the historic tone of the day before moving on to Honfleur, a picture-postcard port where the masts are reflected in the calm waters. Following the banks of the Channel, the road enters the Normandy of 1944: the cliffs of Arromanches, the sands of Omaha and the solemn American cemetery of Colleville-sur-Mer evoke D-Day in awe-inspiring silence. The first night is spent in the Caen region, enough to sample local cider and creamy cheeses.
The next day the walled silhouette of Saint-Malo appears above the Atlantic waves; wandering through its bastions reveals stories of corsairs and romantic writers. Soon after, the skyline changes and the stone pyramid of Mont Saint-Michel emerges , surrounded by shimmering estuaries where the tide rolls in. After ascending the Rue Grande and crossing the cloister of the abbey, the journey turns inland, sleeps near Angers and enters the Loire Valley.
The third day dawns amidst vineyards. After a panoramic view of the castle-fortress of Angers, the road winds its way to Chenonceau, a chateau floating on stone arches in the middle of the Cher. The perfumed Renaissance gardens set the mood for Chambord, a colossal whim of François I with its famous double helix staircase. The evening draws on, the forests of the Loire turn golden, and the coach returns to Paris just as the twilight caresses the Seine, bringing to a close a journey that packs centuries of art, war and heritage into just three days.
