Step by Step
Start at the Schlossplatz fountain, where your guide traces the evolution of Stuttgart from Duke Eberhard's mare stable to the automotive and opera capital. Under the neoclassical porticoes of the Königsbau you'll revisit the industrial prosperity of the 19th century and the wine fairs that still enliven the square every autumn.
The route continues along the shopping artery Königstraße to the minimalist cubic form of the City Library. From its rooftop (option on the 90 and 120 min tours) you'll get a 360° view over urban vineyards, the green domes of the New Palace and the futuristic outline of the Mercedes-Benz Museum on the horizon.
On the longer itineraries the walk descends to the Staatstheater esplanade: here the guide tells how the city came back to life after the 1944 bombings with an ambitious reconstruction plan. Stop to listen to the natural acoustics of the Eckensee, a mirror of water reflecting the classical pediments and contemporary sculptures that dot the park.
Finally, the cobbled lanes of the Bohnenviertel reveal half-timbered facades, independently designed shops and street art murals. The guide shares legends of the "secret formulas" of the maultaschen and suggests centuries-old cellars where you can taste a young Trollinger before bidding farewell, just a few steps from the starting point.
