Step by Step

After picking you up in Cefalù, the scenic bus crosses citrus groves and Norman villages before ascending the ash-covered slopes to the Sapienza hut. There your guide explains the activity of Europe's highest volcano and points out the Silvestri craters, accessible by a gentle hike over black rock and fluorescent lichen. If you prefer, you have some free time to go up by cable car and off-road (optional) to 2,900 m and feel the breath of the earth beneath your feet.

On the way back to the refuge, take the opportunity to taste Etna DOC wine or buy chestnut honey from the artisan stalls before heading back to Taormina along the Cyclops Coast motorway. On arrival, your guide will give you a brief orientation and a map so you can enjoy the Greco-Roman theatre (optional entrance), the flowered balconies of Via Teatro Greco and the views of the Ionian Sea with the smoking silhouette of Mount Etna in the background at your own pace. Free time allows you to have an arancino for lunch, buy some pottery from Caltagirone or toast with an almond granita in front of Palazzo Corvaja.

In the late afternoon, the bus returns along the cliffs and lemon groves, arriving in Cefalù in the late afternoon: your cameras full, your skin perfumed with sulphur and your heart conquered by the fire-sea duality of Sicily.
