Step by Step
The gladiator school lets you discover how people fought in ancient Rome. The price includes the hire of sandals and a tunic, as well as the use of a replica of the weapons of the period. For safety reasons, the sword is made of wood. The experience lasts approximately 2 hours and takes place in the centre of the Eternal City, just a few minutes from the Colosseum. It also includes water or juice.
The trainers will explain the techniques and organise the games. The experience ends with a tournament where you can put what you’ve learnt during training to the test. This activity is suitable for people of all ages, from children aged 6 to adults. It can be a unique idea for a holiday in Rome, as well as an original gift.
Gladiators were the fighters of ancient Rome, and their world was made even more famous by films such as *Gladiator*, starring Russell Crowe. They fought in front of the crowd and appeared before the emperor with the famous phrase ‘Ave Caesar, morituri te salutant’ (Hail, Caesar, those who are about to die salute you). These events were held throughout the empire, although the main venue was the Colosseum in Rome.
In most cases, gladiators were slaves, those condemned to death, or prisoners. However, it was not uncommon for aristocrats or other disgraced individuals to be forced to fight for their survival. With very few exceptions, their life expectancy was not very high. Nevertheless, thanks to these bloody battles, some fighters managed to gain prestige and even their freedom.
The event brings the ancient gladiator schools back to life, without their darker aspects. These places were, in fact, much like prisons, although the food was better, as they were used to forge champions of the arena. For the same reason, they received good medical care.
