Step by Step

The Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo is one of those places that seem to be straight out of a Venetian fairy tale. Located in an inconspicuous corner near the Grand Canal, this small 15th-century palace houses one of the most striking structures in the city: an impressive external spiral staircase known as the Scala Contarini del Bovolo.

Designed in 1499, this staircase combines Gothic, Renaissance and Byzantine styles. Its spiral shape is reminiscent of a snail's shell ("bovolo" in Venetian dialect) and offers an enchanting panoramic view of the rooftops of Venice from its top. It is no coincidence that Orson Welles chose this place to shoot scenes for his film Othello.

Access to the Tintoretto Room will allow you to delve into the work of the famous Venetian painter and explore a less-travelled corner of local art history. This space highlights the value of the palace not only as an architectural landmark, but also as a place of artistic conservation.

Those who select the combined option can also visit the Oratorio dei Crociferi, a small chapel adorned with a cycle of paintings that narrate stories of redemption and spirituality with the mastery of Palma il Giovane.
