Step by Step

The Iwaki Coal and Fossil Museum offers an educational and immersive experience that brings together two fascinating worlds: that of Japan's mining history and that of prehistoric fossils. Located in one of the country's most important former coal mining areas, this museum allows visitors to learn how coal mining evolved from the Meiji era to the 1960s.

One of the museum's main attractions is the simulation of an underground mine, where visitors descend an atmospheric lift to walk through tunnels that recreate the real working conditions of the old miners. Life-size figures and authentic tools help bring this historic environment to life.

The museum also houses one of the most extensive fossil collections in Asia, with complete skeletons of dinosaurs and prehistoric birds that are impressive both for their size and their state of preservation. Among them is a huge dinosaur skeleton found in Iwaki in 1968, considered the largest and most complete fossil found in Asia.

In addition to being a cultural and scientific space, the museum is designed to arouse the curiosity of young and old alike. The exhibits are well organised and provide a clear understanding of both the development of mining and the evolution of life on earth.
