Step by Step
Your adventure gets off to an early start as your guide calls roll in the hotel lobby and you begin your journey to the south coast. First stop is the Għar Dalam cave, where fossil remains reveal the arrival of the island's first inhabitants more than 7,000 years ago. After descending into the main gallery, an elevated walkway reveals layers of earth that hold the bones of extinct hippos and dwarf deer.
Following the scenic road you reach Ħaġar Qim, a solar temple built with blocks weighing up to 20 tonnes. The guide explains the exact alignment with the solstices and points out reliefs of the 'mother goddess'. A few minutes' walk away stands Mnajdra, whose façade faces the open sea; here you'll feel the breeze and echoes of ceremonies dating back to 3200 BC.
The convoy continues to Wied Iż-Żurrieq to admire the Blue Grotto, a natural arch under which the water takes on emerald and cobalt hues. You will have free time to board a boat (optional 25 min walk) or photograph the caves from the lookout point.
For lunch, a large country house serves ftira with olive oil, baked rabbit or vegetable lasagne, accompanied by local wine and homemade dessert. Refuelled, the route continues to Marsaxlokk, Malta's most picturesque harbour. Amidst multicoloured luzzu and nets drying in the sun, your guide reveals the symbolism of the "eye of Osiris" painted on each boat.
The day concludes with a stroll along the Cittadella of Victoria (panoramic stop if the weather permits) before returning by bus to your hotel. Among millenary megaliths, fluorescent waters and seafaring traditions, you will have travelled through millennia of history in just one day.
