Step by Step

Delve into the controversial world of the world’s oldest profession with your ticket to the Museum of the Secrets of the Red Light District in Amsterdam. Located in the Red Light District, known to locals as De Wallen, this neighbourhood, built in 1385, gained considerable notoriety over time for its many brothels. The Museum of the Secrets of the Red Light District opened its doors in 2014 as a small revolution to lift the veil on the taboo of prostitution, promising to tell its story.

Housed in a 17th-century building that was once used as a brothel, you’ll step inside this unique museum and learn about the history of Amsterdam’s Red Light District – from the 16th century right up to the legalisation of prostitution in 2000.

You’ll be immersed in the lives of sex workers and their most intimate secrets. You’ll gain an insight into the profession by sitting in a red-light window, where prostitutes used to advertise their services. During your visit, you’ll see a typical workroom and learn the profession’s best-kept secrets. Through personal audio stories, you’ll hear the story of a Russian woman called Inga, who saw herself as a sex therapist and worked in Amsterdam for 15 years.

The aim of this museum is to educate people about sex work in Amsterdam, including the measures that have been taken to prevent human trafficking. Filled with stories from sex workers about their lives in the industry, the museum aims to show that these women should be treated with dignity and respect.

Learning the history was an eye-opening experience. It made me realise that working sets happen. It's a tough business. However, the museum was great
