Experience Highlights

Paddle through a maze of 365 volcanic islets and discover the wilder side of Lake Cocibolca on this 2hr 30min kayaking adventure. A vehicle picks you up from your hotel in Granada and, after just a ten-minute transfer, you'll receive a brief instruction on land before putting the boat in the water. As you make your way through shallow water channels, your guide points out herons, kingfishers and howler monkeys perched on branches above your head. Each paddle opens up a different view of the city's colonial skyline and the Mombacho volcano that protects it.

  • Book your place and sail without the noise of engines.
  • Get up close to the wildlife and photograph birds, iguanas and local fishermen*.
  • Return to your hotel with transfers included and the rest of the day at leisure.

What’s included

  • Transfer to and from Granada hotels

Step by Step

The experience starts with pick-up from your accommodation in Granada (or agreed central point). In ten minutes you arrive at the jetty, where the instructor adjusts waistcoats, hands out paddles and explains how to steer the kayak in calm waters. The route goes slowly, ideal for beginners and families.

As you enter the Isletas de Granada, the remains of an eruption of Mombacho thousands of years ago, the urban noise fades away. All you hear is the splashing of the paddle and the song of fisher birds. The guide alternates facts about the aquatic flora with stories of the locals who still make a living from artisanal fishing; sometimes you come across local canoes pulling in tilapia or snook for lunch.

The halfway point of the journey coincides with a small colonial fortress erected to guard the lake: a short landing (optional) allows you to climb up to the platform and get a 360° panoramic view of the archipelago, Granada and the green slopes of the volcano. Back in the water, the meanders become narrower: perfect for watching iguanas basking in the sun or herons standing still next to the floating lilies.

Before returning to the jetty, there is time to float for a few minutes and soak up the absolute calm of the lake. Transport awaits to take you back to your hotel; you'll arrive with the afternoon ahead of you to continue exploring the city or rest after your paddle.
