Step by Step
You step onto the gangway and the first thing you notice is the sound: just water and birds; photovoltaic panels power the electric motor, so the boat moves forward without vibration or the smell of fuel. To port, hills covered with trellised vines slope down to the water; to starboard, ancient white vines cling to the hillside. The guide points out how the slate terraces, built by hand centuries ago, regulate the heat and give character to the Touriga Nacional grape.
At the first meander, staff serve a glass of Moscatel Galego - aromatic, with notes of orange blossom - accompanied by toasted almonds. The open deck invites panoramic photos without high railings or engines to spoil the frame. Letters on the rock indicate the boundaries of historic estates while grey herons fly over the vineyard.
The boat turns towards the Valeira Gorge, where the granite walls narrow and the stillness multiplies the echo of distant cowbells. The second wine arrives: an oak-aged Tinto Reserva, intense and spicy; its ruby colour contrasts with the green of the vines reflected in the river. While tasting, the guide shares the legend of the Baroness of Forrester and the rabelos boats that once transported pipes from Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia.
Before returning to Pinhão, you have time to get close to the glassed-in bow, where the solar panels merge with the water in a play of reflections ideal for closing the photo session. The docking is as silent as the departure: you get off the boat with the sensation of having experienced the Douro as the winemaker sees it at dawn, without noise or haste, with the smell of fermentation wafting through the air.
