Step by Step

Immerse yourself in two of the most vibrant and authentic areas of greater Pretoria/Johannesburg with this food tour. In Yeoville, one of South Africa's most diverse suburbs, you'll walk among shops, street food stalls and eateries where people from all over the continent have lived together for decades. Here you will learn how migration has shaped the culinary and social offerings of the suburb.

You'll move to the Maboneng Precinct, a rejuvenated district that fuses street art, galleries and trendy cafes. As you stroll through its colourful murals, you'll sample African specialities reinterpreted in signature restaurants, feeling the creative pulse of Johannesburg.

Each stop on the tour includes a generous sampling of at least four different dishes: from South African boerewors (sausage stew) to Zimbabwe's hearty chilli-goetta, and from Nigerian jollof rice to Cameroonian fufu. Each dish is accompanied by the history of its origin and anecdotes about the communities that introduced it to the city.

This tour is the perfect introduction for first-time visitors to the area or for curious foodies looking for a sensory journey without leaving the city.

It was enjoyable, I learned new things, although at one of the stops we had to wait a bit longer than planned.

Friendly guide, good atmosphere, mix of flavours that I liked a lot. Perhaps an increase in the number of dishes would be even better.

Tasting dishes from different African countries opened my eyes to what goes beyond the typical South African.

A great way to get away from the tourist clichés; however, if you are not very mobile it can be uncomfortable at some stops.
