Step by Step

Barcelona's Main Synagogue is a historic site of incalculable cultural value. Its origins date back to Roman times, although it was in the 13th century that the Call Major area was consolidated as the nucleus of the city's Jewish community. Over time, expansion gave rise to the Call Menor, located near the present-day church of Sant Jaume.

After centuries of silence, in 1987, the medievalist Jaume Riera i Sans identified the exact location of the temple, paving the way for its recovery. Today, restored and ready to receive visitors, the synagogue offers an insight into an essential part of Barcelona's history.

The visit offers a tour of the building's medieval architecture, the Roman foundations and a small museum that illustrates the life of the Jewish community until 1391. With every detail, you will learn what life was like in the Jewish quarter and the importance of this place as a spiritual and cultural centre.

In addition to the cultural visit, the Main Synagogue keeps the Jewish tradition alive, offering the possibility of celebrating private ceremonies such as Bar Mitzvah, Bat Mitzvah or chuppah, in an intimate space full of symbolism.

A stroll through the Call de Barcelona, with its narrow streets and medieval essence, is the perfect complement to this visit, which connects history, spirituality and tradition in the heart of the city.

The restoration is discreet but effective. A piece of memory in the centre of Barcelona.
