Step by Step
The Columbus Monument, originally built for the Universal Exhibition in Barcelona in 1888, is one of the city's historic symbols. It stands out not only for its imposing bronze statue of Christopher Columbus pointing out to sea, but also for its iron and stone column and the reliefs and sculptures that adorn its base, full of maritime and cultural history.
When you get to the viewing platform, you'll take a lift up to just below the statue, which saves you a long flight of stairs and saves you energy so you can enjoy the moment more. From the platform you'll see Barcelona open up before your eyes: the layout of Las Ramblas, the beauty of the Old Port, the classic rooftops of the Gothic Quarter, and on clear days the silhouette of Tibidabo or the mountain of Montjuïc.
The lighting at certain times of the day creates magical scenes: dawn tinges the Rambla with golden tones, dusk offers warm contrasts, and the sea brings freshness and calm to the landscape. If you're there in the evening, you'll be able to capture incredible photographs with Barcelona as the backdrop, from high above. The setting also invites you to reflect on the history of navigation, discovery and cultural exchange that this monument symbolises.
Visitors of all ages can enjoy it, although be aware that the observation deck is small and the space can be a little cramped; however, the views and the symbolism of the monument are worth the experience.
