Step by Step

As soon as you cross the monumental gate, the view opens onto the semicircular cavea, capable of holding 6,000 spectators at the time of Augustus. Your audio guide puts you in the shoes of a 1st century inhabitant, explaining how the citizens enjoyed free tragedies and comedies as a symbol of imperial propaganda.

You will advance to the marble-paved orchestra, the area reserved for magistrates and priests, observing the ingenious drainage system that still keeps the enclosure dry today. At every step, images and maps in the app show the virtual reconstruction of the original stands and the veils that protected from the Extremaduran sun.

The highlight comes when you stand in front of the frons scaenae, a majestic stone curtain of two orders of Corinthian columns and statues of divinities. As you take photographs, the narration reveals the symbolism of each sculpture and the perfect acoustics that continue to amaze modern actors today.

The route continues through the rear garden portico, an ancient promenade where the audience conversed between acts. Here you will discover the remains of mosaics, capitals and cornucopias that illustrate the wealth of Augusta Emerita as the capital of the province of Lusitania.

Before you finish, the audio guide provides information about the 1910 excavation that unearthed the theatre - covered in earth for more than a millennium - and its current role as a living stage for the summer festival. You can extend your visit by strolling through the adjoining Roman Amphitheatre (separate entrance) or exploring the nearby National Museum of Roman Art.
