Step by Step

The General Archive of the Indies, located in the heart of Seville next to the Cathedral and the Alcázar, houses one of the most important documentary treasures in the world. It was created in the 18th century to bring together in one place all the documents relating to the administration of the Spanish territories in America and the Philippines.

During your visit, you will walk through its rooms full of history, where more than 43,000 files and 80 million pages are preserved, recounting the exploits and challenges of the explorers, conquerors and governors of the Spanish Empire. Among the manuscripts you will discover are letters from Christopher Columbus, Hernán Cortés and Francisco Pizarro, as well as ancient maps showing how the New World was known centuries ago.

Your guide will explain how these documents reached Seville, why they were kept here and what role the city played as the gateway to America during the Golden Age. You will also learn about the secrets of colonial administration, transatlantic trade and daily life in the colonies.

The tour will also allow you to admire the Renaissance building designed by Juan de Herrera, an architectural jewel built in the 16th century. Originally intended as the headquarters of the Consulate of Merchants, the building has witnessed more than four centuries of history. Its sober and elegant style reflects the power and influence Seville had during the imperial era.

This experience goes far beyond a simple visit: it is a tour guided by experts with a passion for history, who will help you understand every detail and connect with the human stories behind the documents. With no prior knowledge required, you will enjoy a cultural, accessible and enriching experience.

I liked that the guide related us to European maritime routes. He put the visit in context very well.
