Step by Step

This Spanish cookery class in Seville takes place at an iconic location in the city. The kitchen overlooks the Torre de Oro and the River Guadalquivir, one of the city’s most picturesque views. The activity lasts approximately two and a half hours and features commentary from an expert chef.

When one thinks of Spanish cuisine, one dish springs to mind: paella. According to tradition, this Valencian speciality originated in the region’s interior between the 15th and 16th centuries. It was a traditional peasant dish. The labourers invented it by combining the ingredients they had to hand: rice from the Albufera, chicken or rabbit, and green beans. All flavoured with saffron and paprika.

Nowadays, the most famous and popular variant is seafood paella, which includes cuttlefish, squid, mussels, prawns and langoustines. Today, its popularity has spread far beyond the region’s borders and it can be enjoyed anywhere in the country, including Seville.

The lesson includes another classic of Spanish cuisine: the potato omelette. This essential dish originated centuries ago and its history remains shrouded in mystery. Some believe it originated in Navarre in 1835, during the First Carlist War. Others believe it originated in Extremadura in 1798. The truth is that whilst it seems like a simple recipe, to make it perfectly you need to follow specific guidelines, which you’ll learn during the course.

Finally, the lesson is rounded off with a classic drink: sangria. It’s a summer staple, and much of its success is down to its fresh, fruity flavour. You’ll learn how to perfectly blend red wine, oranges, peaches and lemon with a mix of spirits. An experience that allows you to cook and then taste your own creations.
