Step by Step

With these entry points to the Heping Island Geopark, you can discover one of Keelung’s most fascinating natural areas. Situated next to the entrance to the city’s harbour, the park protects a coastal landscape where the constant action of the sea has created cliffs, abrasion platforms, pits and unique rock formations.

During your walk, you’ll be able to observe such distinctive features as the well-known pedestal-shaped rocks and formations popularly compared to blocks of tofu. The area also contains fossils and fossilised footprints of great geological interest, as well as coastal vegetation adapted to the harsh conditions of the seashore.

The visit invites you to stroll along the paths at a leisurely pace, stop at various viewing points and enjoy the unobstructed views of the ocean. When weather conditions allow, the landscape changes with the tides, revealing new shapes and textures on the rocky platforms, ensuring that every walk offers something new to discover.

As well as its natural appeal, the island preserves traces of its historical past and offers a particularly attractive setting for those seeking to escape the urban environment for a few hours. It’s an easy way to combine nature, photography and geology during a visit to Keelung or a day trip from Taipei.

A beautiful and unique landscape. Not all of the park is equally striking, but the main rocky areas and the viewpoints are well worth a visit.

I found the fossil traces and coastal formations very interesting. It is a peaceful place to learn by observing, without too much explanation.
