Step by Step
The Medina of Tunis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a mosaic of alleyways, souks and madrasas that has crystallised centuries of history. On this tour, a certified guide will take you into the heart of the old city, revealing legends and anecdotes as you stroll along its centuries-old walls.
You will leave Bab Bhar, the historic "Gateway to the Sea", to enter the Rue Jamaa Ez Zitouna, where you can still feel the hustle and bustle of generations. In front of the Ez-Zitouna Mosque you will enjoy its imposing façade and understand its key role in the social and religious life of Tunisia.
The route continues through the Slimania Madrasa, a magnificent example of Hafsid architecture, and passes through specialised souks: perfumers, goldsmiths and craftsmen who keep their ancestral techniques intact. Your guide will share interesting facts about each guild and how they have evolved up to the present day.
In Rue Sidi Ben Arous and Place de la Kasbah, you will experience the essence of urban Tunisia: murals, hidden fountains and neighbourhood meeting places. Here you will taste a fricassé or stuffed chapati (ideal for the "savoury") and, later on, a bambalouni or date makroud as a sweet tasting, in places where the Tunisians themselves eat.
More than just a simple stroll, this tour is an immersion in everyday Tunisian life, balancing history, culture and flavours, to take you back with indelible memories and a conquered palate.
