Step by Step

The Museum of Illusions in Manchester is not a museum where you simply walk round looking at display cases. Here, the idea is to go inside, have a go, move about and let each room play with your perception in a different way.

As you make your way through, you’ll encounter experiences that alter balance, size and depth. The Ames Room, for example, creates the sensation that some people are much larger than others, whilst the vortex tunnels test your sense of direction.

You’ll also be able to walk through endless rooms and walk-through kaleidoscopes, where reflections and repetitions turn the space into the perfect backdrop for photos and videos.

Some of the exhibitions are directly linked to Manchester and reinterpret recognisable elements of the city from a visual and surprising perspective.

Beyond the ‘wow’ factor, many of the installations explain the science behind each illusion, so the visit combines play, perception and learning in a very accessible way.

Some attractions are more eye-catching than others, but with over 65 to choose from, there’s plenty of variety.
