Step by Step
Soak up the atmosphere of Elizabethan Stratford-upon-Avon with a visit to the authentic house where William Shakespeare was born around 1564. Each room is furnished in Tudor style and recreates the family atmosphere in which the young poet grew up before his rise to fame.
Your expert guides, trained and passionate about Shakespeare's work, will tell you anecdotes of Shakespeare' s childhood, his father John's life as a glove maker and the family's role in the thriving market town of Stratford. In the glove-making workshop, you will discover traditional techniques and original tools used by John Shakespeare himself.
As you stroll through the historic gardens, you can watch actors in period costume perform classic scenes - a theatrical foretaste that connects you to the living legacy of his works. This roving outdoor moment offers an enchanting contrast between domestic life and the dramatic grandeur of his texts.
The tour progresses through the ground floor and the upper floor (access via 17 steps), where you will see the family rooms, the main hall and the chambers where the family slept. Every nook and cranny holds stories of weddings, celebrations and, according to local lore, the occasional Shakespearean ghost.
Before you leave, spend a few minutes in the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust's souvenir shop, where you'll find special editions, replica Tudor gloves and illustrated guides to delve deeper into the Bard's world.
