Step by Step
The meeting point is the Windermere tourist information office, where a specialised driver-guide awaits you. On board the air-conditioned mini-bus, the road first winds alongside Lake Windermere and then climbs the legendary Kirkstone Pass, a natural balcony over the glacial valleys of Cumbria.
The vehicle then descends into wooded landscapes and grey stone villages. Along the route are six water bodies surrounded by rolling hills; the camera will barely rest as the guide points out sights of each lake and stops the bus for quick photos. Landmarks include the picturesque village of Grasmere and a Bronze Age stone circle emerging from an open meadow, perfect for understanding the oldest human footprint in the park.
Before returning to Windermere, a final panoramic view combines mountains, flagstone walls and flocks of Herdwick sheep - the bucolic essence of the Lake District summed up in four short hours. The tour concludes at the same point of departure, leaving you with the afternoon free to explore on your own.
