Step by Step
The St. Johns River is one of the few great north-flowing rivers in the USA and is a true natural corridor where warm springs attract manatees each winter. As soon as you set sail, your naturalist guide tells stories about the history of this sanctuary and encourages you to keep your eyes peeled for turtles, blue herons and even the grey silhouette of a manatee rising to the surface.
The boat moves slowly, ideal for capturing every detail: caiman basking on fallen logs, anhingas drying their wings and kingfishers darting through the water. When the wildlife allows, the captain slows down even more so you can enjoy the ride at your leisure and capture the perfect photo.
Amidst forests of cypress trees covered in Spanish moss, the guide describes the Timucua culture, the arrival of the settlers and the conservation challenges of today. Thanks to the small group format, you can ask questions at any time and receive personalised answers.
Halfway through the walk, the sheltered deck invites you to relax and cool off with cold water while the light filters through the branches, creating a mosaic of greenery on the river. The return trip is just as leisurely, allowing you to identify new species and understand why this stretch of the St. Johns is known as the "cathedral" of Floridian nature.
When you disembark, you'll still have a chance to explore the park's trails or get up close to the springs overlook, where manatees congregate in large numbers during the cooler months.
