Step by Step
The meeting point is the central car park in Tusayan, just a few minutes from the park. A safari vehicle with individual seats and large windows awaits you there. After a brief safety briefing, the driver takes a forestry detour with a special permit that avoids the long lines at the southern entrance; elk, mule deer and bald eagles can be seen in their natural habitat along the way.
The first stop is Yavapai Point: a natural terrace that affords frontline views of the Colorado River and the Phantom Ranch forge. Next, the 4×4 meanders up to Pipe Creek Canyon and the whimsical Duck on a Rock, where erosion has sculpted the silhouette of a giant duck.
With golden light bathing the strata, the safari moves on to Grandview Point. Here the guide offers you light blankets and cold drinks as the sun sinks behind the pinnacles, tinting the rock in shades of purple and orange that are impossible to describe. As twilight envelops the canyon, the vehicle returns to Tusayan with the sky tinged with stars and the camera full of memories.
