Step by Step

When you arrive at the ranch, the smell of leather and the dry desert breeze herald a change of pace. The guide selects a gentle horse suited to your height, adjusts the stirrups and teaches you the principles of western riding: loose reins, smooth leg signals and confidence in the saddle. Within seconds, the trot becomes a fluid movement over reddish terrain that contrasts with the deep blue of the sky.

As soon as you leave the corral fence behind, the first views of the Grand Canyon appear: multicoloured gorges over a thousand metres deep. The trail winds through sandstone formations and plateaus dotted with cholla cacti, while your guide points out golden eagle nests and fresh puma tracks. Each bend offers a different angle of the Colorado River and stratified walls, perfect for an epic photo op at the planned mid-route stop.

Depending on the option chosen, the ride is extended until you reach an exclusive viewpoint that almost hangs over the abyss. The silence is broken only by the clacking of horseshoes and the wind coming up from the canyon; a moment to take a deep breath, hydrate yourself with the water provided and feel why the native peoples consider this place sacred.

The return follows a circular route that avoids retracing the same steps, crossing compact sandbanks ideal for jogging if you feel comfortable or walking slowly while the guide shares legends of miners and explorers. When you get out of the saddle, a quick stretch and the presentation of a canyon rider certificate completes the experience before returning to Kingman or continuing your route along Route 66.
