Step by Step

The adventure begins as soon as you step off the boat: an air-conditioned minibus picks you up at the quayside and takes you along the ancient artery that opened the way for thousands of gold prospectors in 1898. Within minutes, the city is behind you and the dense coastal forest opens up, home to spruces and hemlocks that climb impossible slopes.

The first stop is a glacial waterfall accessible by short footbridge; the guide explains the action of the ice that carved the U-shaped valleys of southeast Alaska. Back on board, the road gains elevation and offers viewpoints over the Skagway River Valley, with the White Pass & Yukon Route rail line snaking parallel.

Near the Canadian border, the minibus stops next to the famous "Welcome to Alaska" sign: the perfect photo opportunity to certify your arrival in the last great wilderness of the USA. A few metres further on, the landscape transforms into the Tormented Valley, a high plateau where dwarf shrubs grow sparsely and the wind whistles through lichen-covered rocks.

At the top of White Pass you'll feel a chill in the air and a silence broken only by the crunch of unseasonal snow. After a few minutes to take a deep breath and admire the vastness, the vehicle begins its descent, offering new views of waterfalls and gorges before dropping you back at the dock, ready to re-embark.
