Step by Step

The Henry B. Plant Museum is a time capsule that transports you back to the late 19th century, when railways and tourism transformed the American South. Housed in the magnificent Tampa Bay Hotel - built by Henry B. Plant in the Moorish Revival style - the museum preserves original furnishings, period objects and architectural details that reflect the grandeur of the American Gilded Age.

Upon entering, an audio guide in English or Spanish accompanies you room by room, telling you about the history of the building, daily life in its heyday, and Henry B. Plant, the railroad magnate whose vision drove the development of Florida's tourism industry. The narration combines historical facts with anecdotes about the guests, service and luxuries of the era.

Walk through the rooms decorated with original furnishings, lavish salons, luxury suites and interior gardens, and marvel at the contrast between Victorian elegance and the exotic touches that made this hotel a status symbol. The audio guide allows you to stop at your own pace, delve into what interests you most and not be dependent on schedules or groups.

Easy to access and surprisingly entertaining audio guide. Soft-spoken voiceovers. Only one "but": I missed a stop in the courtyard.

Fascinating period furnishings and audio guide who narrates with passion. Just would have liked more time in the main hall, but very good.

Spectacular historic building. Audio guide adds perfect context. One room had the volume too low, but it didn't bother too much.
