Step by Step
Washington DC is a city made for stopping to admire its monuments, but the distances between them can make organising a visit rather tricky. With the Big Bus Hop-On Hop-Off, you can travel between the main attractions whilst enjoying panoramic views from a double-decker bus and deciding at any time where you want to get off.
The Red Line runs through the capital’s historic heart and passes close to landmarks such as the United States Capitol, the National Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian Castle, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and the Jefferson Memorial. The Blue Line extends the route to other iconic sites such as the White House, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
As you travel through the city, pre-recorded multilingual commentary helps put the buildings, figures and events that have shaped US history into context. Big Bus currently offers audio commentary in eight languages on its Washington DC routes.
You can choose from three pass options. The 24-hour pass is the simplest way to get an overview of the city in a single day. The 48-hour pass gives you more time to explore, along with benefits such as the Georgetown Shuttle, discounts on attractions and shopping, and a photo of the Oval Office. For a more leisurely visit, the 72-hour pass extends the experience to three days and also includes the Georgetown Shuttle and other benefits associated with the pass.
You don’t have to complete the entire circuit in one go. You can stay on board to enjoy a general overview or get off at a monument, stroll along the National Mall, visit one of the Smithsonian museums and then continue on the next bus. The Red and Blue routes usually run from 09:00 to 16:30, with buses running approximately every 30–45 minutes, although timetables may vary.

Reviews
- KK.Easy to buy and access; the maps are great.
- OO.Splendid. We have done these tours in all the major cities and enjoyed them very much.
- LL.I learned a lot more than I would have learned walking alone. I was also able to see a larger area than if I had walked the whole way.
- NN.The comfort and general assistance was definitely a great help in what seems to be a very hectic city with a lot of tourists.
