Step by Step

After the morning pick-up at your hotel, your driver takes you to the Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum. With priority entrance you enter directly into Moat 1, where thousands of figures guard the mausoleum of Qin Shi Huang. The guide reveals the secrets of the lost polychromy and military organisation, before continuing to Moats 2 and 3 and the hall of the famous bronze horses.

At noon you enjoy a typical lunch at a local restaurant - hot dishes, seasonal vegetables and fragrant rice - before returning to the city to walk along a section of the Xi'an Wall, a symbol of the Ming dynasty. From the battlements you get panoramic views of the walled city and, if you wish, you can hire a bike (at your own expense) to cycle over the centuries-old bricks.

The route continues into the colourful Muslim Quarter, a maze of stalls where the aroma of spiced lamb and date cake compete with red lanterns and calls to prayer. There you'll have time to sample sesame sweets or buy spices before the vehicle returns you to your accommodation.

If you select the optional add-on when booking, the day culminates with a feast of sixteen handmade dumplings and the Tang Dynasty Music & Dance Show, where costumes, drumming and acrobatics recreate the golden age of Chang'an.
