Step by Step
Step onto the same ground where Athenians debated laws, business and gossip in the Agora, the communal heart of classical Athens. Here citizens gathered to decide the future of their city-state and to socialise, making this space a living witness to Western history.
See the Temple of Hephaestus, dedicated to the god of fire and forging, one of the best preserved in Greece, and admire its sturdy Doric architecture that has withstood centuries of earthquakes. Reconstructed in marble, its columned perimeter offers an unrivalled setting for understanding Hellenic engineering.
To the east of the square, the Attalus Stoa has been restored to its original design, recreating an arcaded promenade where Athenians shopped, chatted and learned. Today it houses the Agora Museum, with artefacts from the Bronze Age to Roman times: busts, ceramics and relics that tell the story of daily life.
Also visit the Bouleuterion, where the council of elders met, the circular Tholos, whose use is still debated, and wander among the remains of the Roman Agora to see how the city evolved under new empires. Each space is linked in your digital guide with 3D reconstructions, interactive maps and detailed explanations.
Finish your tour in the small museum inside the Stoa, where marble busts and reliefs of martyrs of democracy are on display. A walk through the Agora is a real journey back in time, showing the genesis of politics, philosophy and urban planning as we know them today.
