Step by Step

Discover the impressive Raufarhólshellir cave system, one of Iceland's largest and longest lava tunnels, formed 5,200 years ago by an eruption of the Leitahraun volcanic field. As you walk through its passages, you will see unique geological formations: thousands of colourful stalactites and stalagmites that seem to drip from the ceiling to the floor.

Your English-speaking guide, selected from the best cavers and mountaineers, will lead you safely through this 1.4km prehistoric labyrinth, sharing his knowledge of the tunnel's formation, the island's volcanic history and local legends. With helmet, torch and gloves provided, all you have to worry about is following every nook and cranny.

The route includes narrow sections, natural steps and slight inclines, making it necessary to wear well-fitting hiking boots and hiking clothes. Entry is not permitted without proper footwear - the guide may refuse entry to anyone who does not meet this essential safety requirement.

This tour is the perfect choice for travellers looking for an out-of-the-ordinary experience: volcanic beauty, extreme exploration and a total immersion into the mysteries of the Icelandic underground.
