On this excursion, you’ll have the opportunity, over the course of around 7 hours, to visit the cities of Pompeii and Sorrento. You’ll be accompanied by an expert guide, from whom you’ll learn a wealth of interesting facts about the history and architecture of both cities.
You’ll discover Pompeii, the largest and best-preserved archaeological site in the whole of Europe. The city, known for having been destroyed following the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, was buried beneath the volcano’s ash, which has ensured its preservation. As you stroll through the streets of Pompeii, you’ll have the chance to see a perfectly preserved 1st-century city.
Some of the main sights to visit in the city include the following:
- The Forum: This was the city’s main centre for trade and civic life. It was where businesses were promoted, edicts were posted and goods were sold
- The Lupanar: This was the city’s largest brothel. Inside, erotic paintings are still preserved on the walls
- Thermal Baths: The thermal baths were very popular and important in Ancient Rome, as they served as places for personal hygiene and social gatherings. There are numerous thermal complexes in Pompeii. The oldest of these dates back to the 4th century BC.
You’ll have some free time to enjoy a traditional Italian lunch, go shopping, and explore the city at your leisure. Afterwards, you’ll continue on to the town of Sorrento, famous for its cobbled streets and majestic views of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.
