Step by Step

Penang' s Wonderfood Museum offers a kitschy and fun look at the region's culinary culture with more than 100 giant replicas of dishes ranging from char kway teow to nasi lemak. Each model is handmade by creator Sean Lao, using Japanese food replication techniques to achieve stunning realism.

The tour starts at the Info Zone, where you will learn about the ingredients and spices that define Penang cuisine. Here you'll find panels explaining the Chinese, Malay, Indian and European heritage that is fused into each recipe.

In the Wow Zone, the iconic dishes are displayed in super-size: you'll see a table-sized roti canai, a waterfall-like tarik tea and an entire charcuterie at your fingertips. This space is a favourite of foodies and content creators, perfect for photographing and sharing on social media.

The Educational Zone will show you traditional utensils, kitchen equipment and even smell simulations, making the experience multi-sensory. You will learn about cooking techniques, their historical evolution and the cultural significance of each food.

At the end of the tour, the museum invites you to reflect on Penang's multicultural richness and its role as the "food capital" of Asia. There is nothing else like it in the world: the Wonderfood Museum is the only regional museum dedicated to food that does not rely on public funding, offering an authentic and passionate approach.
