Step by Step
The day gets off to an early start with the fish collection. As soon as the sun rises, the Walvis Bay lagoon is tinged pink by thousands of flamingos feeding in the shallows. You'll have time to adjust your camera and capture perfect reflections before continuing on to the salt refinery, a white contrast that rivals the golden dunes.
With your tyres deflated for the sand, your guide heads along the coastal track where the Namib dunes plunge into the Atlantic- a unique spectacle on the planet. Between ridges, you'll search for jackal and oryx tracks and learn about the plants that survive in the sea mist.
The 4×4 then moves on to Pelican Point, a thin peninsula crowned by a vintage lighthouse. Here a colony of dark-skinned seals bask in the sun and splash about in the passing waters; dolphins and pelicans often approach in search of easy catches. While you enjoy the shoreline "concert", the crew spreads out blankets and serves snacks, soft drinks and local beer for a light oceanfront lunch.
The return journey follows a different route so as not to repeat the scenery: shifting dunes, pristine beaches and, wind permitting, elevated lookouts where the sand forms giant waves. You will arrive in Walvis Bay mid-afternoon, with your skin full of salt, your card full of photos and the indelible memory of an encounter between desert and sea.
