Step by Step

Embark on an idyllic, countryside journey through the most beautiful villages of the Dutch countryside on this excursion to Edam, Zaanse Schans, Marken and Volendam.

Your experience will begin by coach from Amsterdam and continue through the meadows and windmills of the northern Netherlands, where you’ll see the region’s most iconic landscapes, which you’ll have the chance to explore and photograph.

You’ll travel through meadows and fields dotted with beautiful colonial houses and traditional windmills – some dating back some 200 years – in Zaanse Schans. These windmills tell the living history of the Netherlands’ commercial era.

You’ll follow the canal to take in the idyllic scenes of villages such as Volendam and Edam, where the popular cheese of the same name was first made. You’ll have the chance to see where these cheeses are produced and to taste them alongside other varieties, such as Gouda, during an exquisite cheese tasting at the very places where they were created.

And to add a cultural touch to your trip, you’ll take part in a workshop on making clogs – the region’s traditional footwear – with a master clog-maker from Volendam, who’ll demonstrate the art of crafting these world-famous shoes right before your eyes.

As you pass through Marken, situated further to the north-west, you’ll be dazzled by the authentic beauty of its canals, fishing harbours and farms, which contrast perfectly with its idyllic residential area, as if it were straight out of a fairy tale.

You’ll set off on this excursion accompanied by a professional guide, who’ll tell you about the history and significance of the area known as Waterland and its deep-rooted connection to the traditional identity of the Netherlands.

I certainly wouldn't have enjoyed this tour as much as I did without such a good guide.

The walk through the village of Edam while the guide told us the history of the village. Also the visit to the farm with the friendliness and welcome of the people.

I loved the tour through these beautiful regions of the Netherlands. There is no doubt that my husband and I had the best guide we could have asked for.
