Step by Step

A certified driver-guide picks you up in a modern SUV with seat belts for all seats. In less than 45 minutes on the tarmac road, you leave the skyscrapers of West Bay behind you and reach the Sealine area, where the tarmac turns to undulating sand. Here you can adjust your tyre pressure and, if you wish, take a quick photo with the camels resting at the entrance to the desert.

Then the dune bashing begins: the 4×4 climbs ridges of up to 40 metres and descends diagonally, leaving a cloud of dust in its wake - an adrenaline rush that lasts just long enough to whet your adventurous appetite without prolonged dizziness. In between sections, the driver stops the vehicle at natural viewpoints for you to photograph the contrast between the yellow of the dunes and the turquoise blue of the gulf.

The highlight is the view of the Inland Sea, Khor Al Adaid, an arm of salt water that runs between mountains of sand and can only be seen in a few places on earth. The guide explains why UNESCO recognises it as a nature reserve and points out the tracks of desert foxes or small gazelles that can sometimes be seen at dawn.

During the break by the Inland Sea, cold mineral water and a glass of Bedouin tea are served while the sound of the wind replaces the noise of the city. It's a great time to go barefoot and feel the fine sand or, if you prefer, to continue capturing postcard-worthy images.

The return to Doha follows a gentler route that allows you to enjoy the scenery and, on arrival at the tyre inflation station, you'll have access to toilets and a small kiosk. In less than four hours you'll be back at your hotel or the airport, feeling like you've travelled to another planet without leaving Qatar.
