Step by Step
The Fundació Antoni Tàpies is one of Barcelona's most emblematic cultural spaces and a must for lovers of modern and contemporary art. Founded in 1984 by the artist himself, its aim is to promote the understanding and study of art through the work and thought of Antoni Tàpies, considered the leading exponent of informalism in Spain.
The museum houses a permanent collection of more than 350 original works, covering different stages of the artist's career. His visual language is characterised by the expressive power of materials, textures and symbols, influenced by artists such as Paul Klee and Joan Miró. The exhibition invites visitors to discover how Tàpies transformed humble materials - such as marble dust, rope or wood - into powerful means of artistic communication.
In addition to the permanent collection, the Foundation organises temporary exhibitions of contemporary artists, seminars and experimental projects. Recent seasons have included works by Ariella Aïsha Azoulay, as well as the exhibitions dedicated to Tàpies, Certezas sentidas (Heartfelt Certainties) and Teatro (Theatre).
The museum is housed in an industrial modernist building designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, a pioneer of Catalan architecture. The former headquarters of the Montaner i Simón publishing house stands out for its innovative combination of iron and brick, and today it is a work of art in itself. Inside, you can visit the Fundació Antoni Tàpies Library, located in the former publishing house warehouse, which preserves its original 19th-century bookshelves.
A visit to the Fundació Antoni Tàpies is an experience that unites art, history and architecture, ideal for those seeking to discover the creative and cultural essence of Barcelona.
Reviews
- PP.To visit unhurriedly. The sensation of seeing art that speaks with silence stayed with me.
- SS.Although it was not very crowded, at one point a large group came across and one room became overcrowded. Then calm returned.
- MM.Main hall with an impressive stained glass window. In some corridors there are shadows that make it difficult to see well.
- RR.It has its hidden charm. It's not the biggest museum, but it's one of the most unique I've ever seen.
