Edinburgh, Loch Ness and the Highlands 3-Day Trip from London by Train

The adventure begins at London King’s Cross, from where you’ll set off by train to Edinburgh. The journey takes just over four hours and allows you to take in the British countryside and various stretches of coastline before arriving in the Scottish capital.

On the first day, you’ll have time to explore Edinburgh at your own pace. The experience includes admission to Edinburgh Castle, a fortress with over 1,000 years of history perched on an ancient volcanic rock. You’ll also receive a ticket for the hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus, allowing you to get on and off freely at its various stops.

The second day is dedicated to the Outlander filming locations. Accompanied by a local guide, you’ll travel to Midhope Castle, used as Lallybroch, and Doune Castle, known in the series as Castle Leoch. The route continues via Culross, which stood in for the fictional village of Cranesmuir, and Falkland, which became 1940s Inverness.

The final stop of the day is Blackness Castle, the setting for Fort William and a prime spot from which to admire the estuary and the Forth Bridge. The return to Edinburgh is scheduled for around 17:30.

On the third day, you’ll once again have free time until your return train departs. You can stroll through the Old Town, explore the Georgian architecture of the New Town, visit Calton Hill or finish off any sightseeing you may have left undone before returning to London.
