Step by Step

This 10-hour tour from Edinburgh is a total immersion into Scotland's past: you'll travel in a modern vehicle accompanied by an expert guide who will narrate legends, battles and curiosities as you cross the Firth of Forth and see the fishing villages of North and South Queensferry. Get ready for an intense day of castles, cliffs and villages steeped in history.

First stop is Dunnottar Castle, a medieval gem that dominates the cliffs overlooking the North Sea and played a key role in the Scottish Wars of Independence. If access is closed due to bad weather, your guide will take you to the nearby seaside town of Stonehaven for a panoramic view of the coastline. During the tour you will also pass through Kirriemuir, the birthplace of J.M. Barrie, and have the opportunity to view the house-turned-museum from the vehicle.

After exploring the cliffs and castles, the route continues to Dundee and on the way back through Silicon Glen, where modernity meets Scottish fields and lochs. Your guide will offer recommendations on what to see and do in Edinburgh on the way back; there will also be time for photos and stretching your legs at each stop.

Highlights of the day:

  • Dunnottar Castle: clifftop ruins with dramatic views and a past linked to Robert the Bruce; perfect for historic photos.
  • Stonehaven (alternative for bad weather): Coastal village with beautiful coastal viewpoints, ideal if the castle is closed for security.
  • Glamis Castle: Exemplar of Victorian Gothic and residence of the Lyon family; its history and legends, including the connection with Macbeth, make for an awe-inspiring visit.
  • Dundee and RRS Discovery: Walk around the city to see the River Tay and the famous RRS Discovery ship, a symbol of the great Antarctic explorations.

I experienced only a small lag at the beginning due to traffic; the guide managed it well.

I loved crossing valleys between mountains and seeing almost solitary castles. Very personal.

Some parts of the road were narrow and slow. But that does not detract from the magic of the route.
