The Spinnaker Tower, inaugurated as the centrepiece of Portsmouth's renovated harbour, rises 170m above the Solent. Its name and form pay homage to the spinnaker sail, central to the city's rich naval history. Before work began, residents chose this elegant design from three options: the result is a fluid silhouette, very appropriate for a port with a maritime heritage.
As you enter the entrance level, you are greeted by staff and a panel illuminates the essential facts: how the tower is designed to flex without compromising safety and why the floor glass is 60mm thick, capable of supporting the weight of two black rhinos! After the entrance checkpoint, ascend to the first observation deck and gaze out over the expanse of the harbour and the old city.
The second and third platforms elevate your experience: here floor-to-ceiling windows offer different perspectives of the Solent, the three forts and the south coast. The sea breeze and the height turn each view into an unforgettable postcard. If the weather is cloudy, remember that your ticket allows you to re-enter the same day as many times as you like, or come back for free in the next three months.
