The format

The Copa América has a two-phase format: a group stage and a final stage. The teams are divided into four groups of four teams each. In each group, each team plays three matches to face all the teams in the group.

Three points are awarded to each team for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. At the end of the group stage , the top two teams from each group qualify for the final stage, which consists of quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final. The match-ups for this final stage are decided by a draw, bearing in mind that teams that have played in the same group cannot face each other in the quarter-finals.

Full details of the format and rules of the competition can be found in the official rules published on the official Copa América website.

And getting more to the point, here are some quick facts about each of the participants in this 2024 edition and their history in the competition:

Argentina

Argentina is the reigning champion after defeating Brazil in the final of the 2021 edition. Along with Uruguay, it is the team that has won the Copa América the most times, a total of 15, and is one of the pioneers of the competition. The famous albiceleste shirt has been worn by legends such as Messi, Maradona and Kempes. Argentina is aiming to repeat its success in the United States, although it will not be easy.

Mexico

Of the CONCACAF teams, Mexico is the one with the most history and prestige. Although they have never won the tournament, they have managed to reach two finals in 1993 and 2001. This is their 13th participation in the Copa América.

United States

United States: The host nation of the Copa América is also one of the newest teams to compete in the tournament. They made their debut in 1993 and since then their greatest achievements have been reaching the semi-finals in 1995 and 2016. The latter was the centenary edition of the Copa América and also the first time the country hosted the competition.

Brazil

Brazil is undoubtedly one of the world's greatest teams. Winners of five World Cups, "la canarinha" is the third most successful team in the Copa América, with nine titles. Legends such as Pelé, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho speak of their greatness and their determination to lift the Copa América trophy again, which they have not done since 2019. This is their 38th participation.

Peru

The Peruvian national team is among the historic winners of the Copa América. They have won it twice. They lifted the title for the first time in 1939 and did not repeat the feat until 1975. Peru has now participated in the Copa América 33 times.

Ecuador

This edition of the Copa América is the 30th in which the Ecuadorian national team has participated. It has hosted the tournament three times, and its best result to date has been two fourth-place finishes, achieved in two of the editions it hosted in 1959 and 1993. Matching or surpassing that fourth-place finish is the goal for this edition.

Uruguay

When it comes to historic teams in the Copa América, Uruguay is undoubtedly one of the most prominent. It has participated in the tournament the most times, with 45 appearances, and, along with Argentina , has won it the most times, with 15 victories. Uruguay has been present since the first edition in 1916, which it also won, and lifted its last cup in 2011.

Colombia

The "cafeteros", as the Colombian national team is known, have already played in 23 editions of the Copa América and even won the tournament in 2001 in a tournament held in their own country. Repeating such a feat in 2024 will be very difficult, but they are certainly a team to be reckoned with.

Chile

Chile. The United States brings back fond memories for Chileans. In 2016, in the centenary edition also held in the US, they lifted their second Copa América title. The first was a year earlier, in 2015, with both years coinciding with their golden age led by historic players such as Alexis Sánchez and Arturo Vidal.

Venezuela

The Venezuelan national team was the last Conmebol team to make its debut in the competition. That was in 1967, and since then they have participated in 19 editions. Their best result came in 2011 when they reached the semi-finals.

Panama

Panama The newest team in the competition. They have only played in one Copa América. That was in 2016, in the centenary edition, and in their debut they were unable to make it past the group stage. In this, their second participation, the goal is clear: to improve on their 2016 result.

Paraguay

Paraguay: One of the classic teams in the Copa América. Paraguay is the third most frequent participant in the tournament, behind only Argentina and Uruguay. Since its debut in 1921, it has participated 38 times, winning the title twice, in 1953 and 1979.

Jamaica

After Panama, Jamaica is the second most novice team in terms of Copa América appearances. The 2024 edition will be their third, with a clear objective: to achieve their first victory in the tournament, something they failed to do in their debut in 2015 or in 2016. Getting through the group stage is an even more ambitious goal for the Jamaicans.

Bolivia

Bolivia is among the winners of at least one Copa América. It won in 1963, playing on home turf. In 1997, it also reached the final, but this time it lost to Brazil, finishing as runner-up. In total, Bolivia has played in 28 Copa Américas up to the 2014 edition.

Canada

Canada is the only team making its debut in the competition and will do so in style, participating in the opening match on 20 June at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Canadian team qualified for the 2024 Copa América by eliminating Trinidad and Tobago in the play-off in March, winning 2-0.

Costa Rica

The Ticos, as Costa Ricans and their national team are known, will be playing in the Copa América for the sixth time after their last qualification in the 2016 edition. Costa Rica's greatest achievement was reaching the quarter-finals, a milestone they have achieved twice and will be fighting to equal or even surpass in this 2024 edition.
