Endless beaches, warm weather and lively day and night-time entertainment have made Miami one of the United States' top tourist destinations. Here you can enjoy endless activities to have a great time: a lively nightlife, magnificent shows, water sports, and much more.

But did you know that the city has many other surprises in store for you? Surprises in the form of unique buildings, museums and galleries, wild nature, and the best cuisine. I'll tell you all about this and much more below.

1. Discover the city on a guided tour

Miami is an exciting city, full of contrasts and hiding endless interesting places to discover: South Beach, Little Havana, Coral Gables... Where to start?

Deciding can sometimes be difficult. That's why I recommend getting your first taste of the city with a guided tour. If you combine a land tour with a boat tour, you'll get the most complete view of this wonderful city. This will allow you to better plan the rest of your visit or choose themed tours that interest you.

If it's incredible from land or sea, Miami from above is spectacular. A helicopter ride gives you the opportunity to admire its endless beaches and be amazed by the intense blue of the waters that bathe them.

You'll also feel like you can touch the skyscrapers of Downtown and enjoy the view of the luxurious mansions of Palm Island. Flying over Miami is one of those adventures that you enjoy every second of. If you're not afraid of flying, don't miss it.

You can also book a private plane tour of Miami, an experience that will allow you to get to know the city in a unique way.

Everything in this neighbourhood is special. Walking around it is like travelling to other lands without leaving Miami. Here you will discover authentic Cuban traditions, listen to Latin music, smell the aroma of tobacco and taste the best Caribbean food.

That won't be the only thing that surprises you about Little Havana. On Calle Ocho you'll find interesting art galleries. Meanwhile, in Domino Park you'll see older people playing chess or dominoes, oblivious to the hustle and bustle of the neighbourhood. And if your visit coincides with Cultural Fridays, which are held once a month, you can look forward to a lively festival of art, music and culture in the street.

If you are passionate about art and culture, Miami is a great destination for you. The city is home to countless museums, art galleries, unique buildings and magnificent examples of urban art. All artistic disciplines, in one way or another, are represented here.

I particularly recommend two areas. On the one hand, the elegant and sophisticated Design District. On the other, Wynwood, the alternative neighbourhood par excellence, where creativity and urban art reach their maximum expression.

Can you imagine seeing alligators, pelicans, manatees or ospreys in their natural habitat? You can do just that in one of the largest and most incredible natural spaces in the United States. The Everglades is a vast swampy area that is home to unique flora and fauna.

But the experience of spending a whole day in this national park is unforgettable, and not just because of its ecosystem. The way you do it is also special. On the one hand, you will walk along its trails and, on the other, you will be able to admire it from the water, aboard small boats or hydrofoils. A real adventure for an unforgettable day!

Villa Vizcaya is one of the most surprising places in Miami. Can you imagine a Renaissance-style villa in Florida? This spectacular mansion is inspired by 16th-century Italian palaces and no detail has been overlooked. Its interior is now a museum displaying furniture, paintings, decorative objects and musical instruments.

And if the mansion is wonderful, don't miss its gardens, dotted with sculptures, fountains and waterfalls. Strolling through them, you'll forget the hustle and bustle of the city. And all this with the added bonus of fabulous views of Biscayne Bay. A real treat.

From a cruise ship, you'll enjoy one of the most attractive tours of Miami. Biscayne Bay is a huge tropical lagoon whose shores are home to some of the city's most iconic landmarks, from the skyscrapers of Downtown to Miami Beach and Fisher Island.

But if there's one thing that will surprise you, it's the artificial islands that were created in the bay. On the one hand, because of the engineering feat they represent. On the other, because they are home to the mansions of celebrities such as Julio Iglesias, Gloria Estefan and Ricky Martin, among many others.

If you're travelling with children, be sure to include the Miami Zoo in your plans. More than 3,000 animals live here. It is also the only subtropical park in the country. Only Florida's unique climatic conditions have made it possible to perfectly reproduce the habitats of species from other continents.

The zoo also organises a host of activities to bring wildlife closer to young and old alike: encounters with animals, talks with keepers and bird shows. Everything you need for a fun and educational day out!

South Beach is not just about beaches and fun. Many of the city's most iconic buildings are located here. Did you know that there are more than 800 examples of Art Deco architecture in Miami? Many are in this neighbourhood, where you can step back in time to the era of the mafia and Prohibition.

But there are other gems not to be missed, such as Casa Casuarina, the mansion that belonged to Gianni Versace and where he was murdered on its doorstep. And if South Beach's architecture is incredible by day, at night, with its colourful lighting, it is spectacular.

You may not be able to afford to live in a large mansion, but in Miami you can get close to some spectacular ones. If you're curious, don't resist taking a boat trip along Millionaire's Row, the most exclusive area of the city.

This is where members of high society and celebrities such as Shakira, Alicia Keys and Will Smith have their homes. They are magnificent buildings, surrounded by spectacular gardens. Inevitably, they tend to arouse genuine envy among mere mortals, rather than admiration.

21. See the Florida Keys landscape from the air

Florida Keys| ©Pom'

The Keys form one of the most incredible places on the East Coast. But only from the air is it possible to see all their beauty. That's why it's worth contemplating this succession of 1,700 islands and islets from the air.

You'll see how they act as a natural barrier between the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. Take note of their beaches and the most famous keys, especially Key Largo and Key West. But above all, observe the road that connects the islands. The US1 Overseas Highway is no less than 200 kilometres long, much of it over water.

22. Relax on a sailing trip around Biscayne Bay

Here's an activity that will allow you to enjoy the quieter side of Miami. Biscayne Bay is one of the city's treasures. It is bordered on one side by Downtown and on the other by Miami Beach. Its calm waters are ideal for sailing away from the traffic and hustle and bustle. If you've never been on a sailing boat before, the experience will be unforgettable.

Just a few miles from the coast and with the city as your backdrop, you can try your luck with a fishing rod. And no matter what time of year it is, Miami's privileged location and wonderful climate make it possible to fish any day of the year. For decades , tobacco was one of Florida's major industries. The best of the Cuban tobacco tradition came to these shores and took root here. Rolling a cigar is an art form, and in Miami you can still see how it is done by hand.

And you can get a much broader view of what this industry meant by visiting a cigar factory. In addition to seeing how they are made, they will explain the complex process of growing, harvesting and preparing tobacco leaves. It is certainly an interesting visit.

But if there's one thing that's sure to catch your attention, it's the mangrove tunnels you'll pass through along the way. You'll find it hard to believe you're just a stone's throw from the city. It is undoubtedly one of the most unique buildings in Miami. It is a structure carved out of coral rock. Its creator, Edward Leedskalnin, took no less than 28 years to sculpt it. With his own hands and simple tools, he shaped more than a thousand tonnes of rock to create this fantasy.

Coral Castle has its own legend. I'll just say that it's a love story, but not one with a happy ending. If you want a clue, listen to Sweet Sixteen by Billy Idol. Or, better yet, visit this peculiar castle.

If you're a diving enthusiast, Miami is a destination you'll enjoy like no other. The Florida Keys are considered a National Marine Sanctuary. Added to this is the only coral reef in the United States and the third largest in the world.

As you can imagine, there are a thousand places to go diving here. In Key Largo, for example, you can see the underwater statue of Christ of the Abyss up close. And south of Key West is the USNS General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, deliberately sunk to create an artificial reef.

All you have to do is hold on tight, listen to the captain's instructions, let yourself go and try not to fall off. It's a thrilling experience, even for the little ones, albeit at a slower speed.

But if there's one thing that will leave young and old alike speechless, it's the dolphin and sea lion shows. However, it's not all fun and games, as the park also does a great deal of work to protect and conserve marine species.

But Miami's nightlife is much more than this famous promenade. You don't need to be in great physical shape. If you've never done it before, with a little training you'll be able to fly over the ocean and admire Miami from one of the best vantage points possible.

Attention, shopping lovers. At Bayside Marketplace, it will be very difficult not to give in to temptation. This is a colourful and always lively outdoor shopping and leisure centre. It brings together more than 150 shops of all kinds, as well as cafés and restaurants where you can recharge your batteries.

But shopping isn't the only thing you'll enjoy. Here you can also be entertained by countless street performers, listen to concerts or watch lively visual shows. All this is complemented by wonderful views of Biscayne Bay. What more could you ask for?

52. Meet the primates at Monkey Jungle

Monkey Jungle is a unique space. Orangutans, gibbons, crab-eating macaques and other endangered primate species live here in semi-freedom. For the little ones, it's a super fun experience to see how they behave up close.

The most curious thing is that, while the animals roam freely, the humans are "caged". The tour takes place through cage-like tunnels, which is what makes this space so different. A perfect place for an afternoon with the family.

53. Enjoy modern art at the Pérez Art Museum Miami

Miami is a cutting-edge city, and its museums reflect that. At the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM), you'll find an extensive collection of 20th- and 21st-century Western art. Its collection includes works by artists such as Diego Rivera, John Baldessari and Kenny Rivero.

But this museum isn't just a must-see if you're interested in art. If you're attracted to architecture, you'll love the building that houses it. Its design mimics the elevated structure on pillars of a group of houses located in the middle of Biscayne Bay. By the way, don't miss the views from its terrace.

54. Go on an urban safari in a Jeep

Unleash your adventurous spirit without leaving the city. In Miami, you can go on a different kind of safari. You won't see wild animals, but you will see unique buildings such as the Freedom Tower, alternative neighbourhoods such as Wynwood, neon lights on Ocean Drive and luxury in the Venetian Islands.

You'll have a great time discovering every corner of Miami from a Jeep, including places you already know and others that will surprise you. Oh, and get your camera or mobile phone ready, because you won't be able to stop taking photos.

When you need a little break, you'll find it in this magnificent botanical garden. Here you can stroll among palm trees, vines, orchids and all kinds of exotic plants and trees. You can even lose yourself in a jungle with an artificial fog system that recreates the tropical ecosystem.

The garden was designed so that everyone can enjoy it, making it fully accessible. And if you don't feel like walking, there is a small free tram that runs through it. Is your visit to Miami coinciding with Christmas? Then don't miss the light show, it's wonderful.

56. Feel like a star at the Olympia Theatre

It opened its doors back in 1926, but it hasn't lost any of its glamour. When you visit the Olympia Theatre, you may not walk the red carpet, but you will be captivated by the magic of this place, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Its stage has been graced by music greats such as Elvis Presley and Luciano Pavarotti. And its screen has shown the best films of all time. You too can enjoy a concert or the best of the seventh art in its magnificent auditorium.

57. Explore Miami Beach by bicycle

A bike is the perfect way to get lost in Miami Beach. There are also a number of routes for exploring the neighbourhood. All of them are well paved and very easy, so anyone can do them.

Need some ideas? I suggest a circular route or a ride along the coast, first along Ocean Drive and then along the Miami Beach Boardwalk. Another option is to cycle through the Art Deco district or even take a leisurely ride through one of South Beach's urban parks.

Perhaps you've taken a stroll around Miami's marina. And perhaps you've imagined how it would feel to be aboard one of the yachts moored there. Why dream about it when you can make it a reality? In Miami , you'll have no problem chartering an exclusive yacht for a private cruise around the bay.

It's a great plan when you want to relax after a tiring day of sightseeing. With the Miami skyline in the background, your tiredness and stress will melt away.

If, in addition to walking its streets, soaking up its atmosphere and enjoying its beaches, you want to learn more about this vibrant city, visit the History Museum. There you will discover that Miami's origins date back many centuries.

You can see how the city has changed, grown and evolved through a magnificent archive. Thousands of historical images, letters, objects of all kinds, gold and silver from shipwrecks and even an old tram will take you back in time. If you like history, don't miss it.

60. Play sports at Matheson Hammock Park

To say that Matheson Hammock Park is an urban park is an understatement. It occupies a small peninsula and in the calm waters that surround it you can go kitesurfing or kayaking. It even has a small marina.

And on dry land? Its network of trails is ideal for walking, running or cycling. If you fancy a swim, you can take one in its artificial pool, or you can have a picnic in its table areas. As you can see, it's a perfect place to enjoy a relaxing day with family or friends.

61. Visit an old monastery

Can you imagine a Spanish Cistercian monastery in the heart of Miami? Don't imagine it, visit it. But don't do so thinking that it's part of the Spanish legacy in this area, because it has nothing to do with old missions.

A century ago, William Randolph Hearst bought this monastery. It was dismantled stone by stone (more than 35,000 blocks) and reassembled thousands of kilometres from its original location, a small village in Segovia. Today, the Old Spanish Monastery is one of the most charming places in Miami.

62. Stroll among skyscrapers in Downtown

The heart of Miami may not be as spectacular as that of other large cities in the country. But that doesn't mean it lacks charm or ostentation. Beyond visiting attractions such as Bayfront Park or the Bayside Marketplace shopping complex, it's worth taking a stroll along Brickell Avenue, flanked by magnificent glass buildings.

Among all these avant-garde buildings, one much more classic one stands out: the Freedom Tower. Another interesting place is the American Airlines Arena. If you like basketball, here you can watch a Miami Heat NBA game.

63. Hop on a tourist bus

It may be the most typical thing to do in tourist cities, but that doesn't make it any less interesting. Especially if you don't have much time to enjoy Miami, an open-top bus tour is a great way to see the city and learn about its most interesting features from expert guides.

What's more, the weather is usually good, so you'll really enjoy the ride. If you can, combine it with a night tour to admire the colourful lights of South Beach or a cruise to see Biscayne Bay. You'll take home the best memories of Miami.

64. Be enchanted by the magic of sunset at Bayfront Park

Nestled among the skyscrapers in the heart of Miami, Bayfront Park is a small oasis. It's more than just an ideal place to relax; it's a place to quietly enjoy the sunset. You'll take away an image of Miami that's very different from any other you've seen.

But any time is perfect for exploring the park. It's a space with a sandy beach where all kinds of activities are organised. It is also dotted with fountains and monuments. One of the most moving is the one commemorating the crew of the Challenger shuttle, which disintegrated in a tragic accident.

65. Dream in Coral Gables

Coral Gables is one of Miami's most exclusive and unique neighbourhoods. Walking around it is one of those experiences that will let your imagination run wild. Large Mediterranean-style mansions, beautiful tree-lined boulevards and truly fantastical gardens make it a place straight out of a film.

In the so-called "beautiful city" you can also enjoy the Venetian Pool, Matheson Hammock urban park, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden and the exclusive shops of Merrick Park. And if you like places shrouded in mystery, stop off at the Biltmore Hotel.

66. Contemplate Miami from South Pointe Park

South Pointe Park is at the southern tip of Miami and is one of the most charming corners of the city. From here, you'll have a wonderful panoramic view of Biscayne Bay, Miami Beach, and Fisher Island, as well as the skyscrapers of Downtown.

But there's much more to do in this park. Its pier, in addition to being a place to contemplate the city, is a space for fishing. There is access to the beach, children's playgrounds, picnic areas and even a small water park. All this makes it perfect for enjoying with the little ones.

67. Attend a concert

The Adrienne Arsht Centre for the Performing Arts is one of the largest concert venues in the country. If you feel like listening to the best music, check out its programme when you're in Miami. You're sure to find something interesting. The centre hosts everything from jazz evenings to dance performances, opera and concerts by popular artists and groups.

Even if you're not going to attend a musical event, it's worth visiting this venue. Its lobbies and halls are spectacular. There are also guided tours so you don't miss a thing.

68. Fire unique weapons at a shooting range

Firing exotic firearms that are not available to everyone is a unique experience. It is even for those who regularly practise shooting. It is not just about releasing adrenaline or testing your aim, but about holding a very special weapon in your hands.

It is one of the many experiences that Miami has to offer. You'll enjoy shooting machine guns and other unusual weapons. Always in a controlled environment and under the supervision of real experts. Are you up for it?

69. Discover the most authentic Miami in Coconut Grove

Coconut Grove| ©Anthony Quintano

In Coconut Grove, you'll discover one of Miami's most characterful neighbourhoods. It's also the oldest. Quiet, diverse and with a bohemian touch, The Grove hides endless treasures such as the Vizcaya Gardens and the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science.

But there's much more to enjoy here. Immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere of CocoWalk, full of shops, restaurants and entertainment venues. Prefer something different? Discover its interesting art galleries or take a stroll along its marina. You'll see a very different side of Miami from other areas of the city.

70. Spend a day at the beach

Miami is synonymous with wonderful beaches. Some are perfect for a quiet swim, water sports, fun with friends or simply sunbathing. The best known and liveliest are those in South Beach, especially in the Lummus Park area.

If you prefer something quieter, the northern part of Miami Beach is a good option. A special alternative are the beaches in some urban parks: Crandon Park, Matheson Hammock Park or Homestead Bayfront Park. Any of them are ideal for enjoying with the family.

71. Learn and enjoy at Jungle Island

Miami has many places that are perfect for enjoying with children and, at the same time, learning about nature. Jungle Island is not just another one, it is special. Here you can not only observe, but also interact with the animals.

Feeding lemurs, kangaroos, or giant tortoises is an unforgettable and enriching experience for the little ones. They can also see (from a distance) all kinds of birds, orangutans, tigers, and many other animals. And all this in an environment that perfectly replicates the natural habitat of these species.

72. Visit Deering State

Deering State| ©Angelina

Deering State is one of Miami's lesser-known gems. On this estate, you will discover two magnificent historic houses. On the one hand, Richmond Cottage, considered the first hotel in the southern United States. On the other hand, there is Stone House, a mansion inspired by traditional Catalan architecture.

Not only are the houses spectacular, but so is the surrounding environment with its tropical vegetation. And there's more, as interesting fossil remains have been found on these grounds. To top off this magnificent cocktail, all kinds of events are organised here, from exhibitions to concerts and conferences.

73. Walk along the Miami Beach Boardwalk

Walking, running, cycling or skating. It doesn't matter how you do it. Walking the six kilometres of the Miami Beach Boardwalk is an experience not to be missed. There are many reasons: you'll enjoy magnificent views of Miami Beach, follow the line of Miami's best beaches and admire many unique buildings.

With a section of wooden walkways and another paved section, it's always a lively promenade. And if you get tired, you can stop at one of the bars and restaurants you'll find along the way. As you'll see, this promenade is one of the most authentic places in the city.

74. Practise yoga on the beach

Miami has fabulous beaches, and you can have a great day sunbathing or practising water sports at any of them. But you can do much more. Yoga is a discipline that works with the body and mind, and there's nothing like a natural space to get started or practise with a teacher.

It's also an activity that you can do alone or with friends or family. When you return to the hustle and bustle of the city, you'll be much more relaxed and recharged to continue enjoying it.

75. Stroll down Lincoln Road

Lincoln Road| ©Ed Webster

This shopping street is very close to Ocean Drive and has a great atmosphere both during the day and at night. Not only are there a number of shops to suit all budgets, but also entertainment venues and restaurants that stay open late into the night.

And if that's not enough, on Sundays Lincoln Road hosts a market selling fruit, vegetables and handmade products. Also on Sundays, but from October to May and every fortnight, you can enjoy a lively antiques market.

76. Travel back to the 1920s in the Art Deco District

Art Deco District| ©Joao Carlos

Elegant and sophisticated, Art Deco triumphed in the 1920s and 1930s. Few places offer such a magnificent concentration of buildings in this style as Miami. And most of them are concentrated in this district. Don't miss the Park Central Hotel, the Cavalier Hotel, Essex House or the Post Office, which are real gems.

My recommendation is to visit the Art Deco District during the day, but also at night. When the sun goes down, these buildings are illuminated with coloured lights that create an incredible visual spectacle. It's sure to impress you.

77. Visit Freedom Tower

Freedom Tower| ©Tom Schaefer
Freedom Tower| ©Tom Schaefer

It's not the tallest building in Miami, but it is one of the most interesting, making it a must-see. This century-old tower stands just 80 metres (17 floors) tall, but its unique architecture, inspired by the Giralda in Seville, is striking.

Its history is also unique. It was the headquarters of the Miami News, the city's first newspaper. Later, it was transformed into a centre for assisting Cuban refugees. Today, it houses the Miami Dade College Museum of Art and Design and the Museum of Cuban Emigration.

78. Step back in time aboard a train

Gold Coast Railroad| ©Micha L. Rieser

If you're feeling nostalgic, make time in your schedule to visit the Gold Coast Railroad. You can take a trip back in time as you admire a magnificent collection of historic train carriages. Don't miss the Ferdinand Magellan, armoured in steel and with bulletproof windows. Why? It was the first presidential carriage, inaugurated by President Roosevelt.

The museum also has a model room and railway equipment exhibitions that promise to keep you entertained. And you can visit for free. When? On the first Saturday of the month.

79. Discover Española Way

Española Way is one of the most picturesque streets in Miami. If you're wondering about the reason for its name, just take a look at its pink and white facades and red roofs. They are sure to remind you of typical Mediterranean architecture.

The first commercial development in South Beach, this street is perfect for taking a short break in one of its bars and restaurants. And not only that, here you can also shop in its stores, enjoy the live shows that are organised, or even participate in yoga classes.

80. Have fun like a kid at the Children's Museum

The Children's Museum of Miami is a place to learn, play and have a great time. In fact, it's an almost essential visit if you're travelling with children. Here, attractions and activities await to stimulate their creativity and curiosity. It also has exhibitions and interactive experiences.

And it's not just the little ones who enjoy it. For older visitors, visiting this space is like taking a trip back to childhood. You may not be able to participate in the games and activities, but it will bring back nostalgic memories of your childhood.
