From the first pedal, the route passes murals that tell the story of Namibia's history of independence: bright colours and slogans of unity painted on brick walls. The guide points out each work and explains how community artists transform the neighbourhood into an open-air gallery. Further along, a passage between tin shacks leads to the central market, where the aroma of dried fish and desert spices invites a photo stop.

Halfway along the route, you roll over a paved stretch that leads to the Mondesa cultural centre, where a mini-show of drums and a cappella vocals brings a smile to your face. While you rest in the shade, your guide hands out a vetkoek filled with spiced meat and pickled vegetables, a classic midday snack.

Refuelled, the peloton enters an area of wide avenues where community gardens grow spinach and corn to supply school canteens. The contrast with the containers converted into fashionable shops demonstrates the vitality of Mondesa: tradition and modernity coexist wheel by wheel.

The final stretch skirts the Vineta stadium, Swakopmund's sporting heart, and offers a panoramic view of the reddish dunes of the Namib merging with the Atlantic Ocean.
